As someone who has been writing on the platform for three years now, I'd like to see the algorithm "fixed," for lack of a better term. My feed is always full of clickbait written by white men, none of whom I follow. My followers also often email me to ask me why I stopped writing and are shocked to find that I still write 1-3 times a week - they just never see my stories in their feeds anymore.
I'd like to see attention paid to diversity and the equitable amplification of all voices on this platform. A casual visitor might think this site is a collection of articles on productivity hacks, cryptocurrency tips, and bro culture, written by white men, despite the fact that there are just as many high-quality writers who aren't white men and who are writing about important subjects like gender equality, racism, education, and environmentalism.
Example: After the Oscars, Medium's weekly roundup of articles that landed in my inbox, "handpicked by Medium's curators," featured a story on Black women's hair (referring to the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident and its roots in misogynoir). The story was written by a white man. I was shocked, honestly, especially considering the plethora of articles on the topic that were written by well-respected Black female writers here on this platform. (Allison Gaines comes to mind.)
And finally, I'd like to see a more proactive culture of protection here for writers in marginalized demographics. The harassment by trolls is overwhelming (and that includes the death threats that so many writers here get and the only recourse we have is to block the person making them), and I've also witnessed a systemic problem with sexual harassment and predation on this platform, not just by the readers, but by some of the writers, as well. I realize there might not be anything more that can be done on the "back end" of these circumstances, but it would be nice to see Medium speaking out loudly and regularly about its policies against harassment, death threats, sexual predation, etc. in support and protection of their writers, just as any other big media conglomerate might do.
Thanks!
