I actually think it’s sweet for people to hold doors open — just so long as they let me do the same for them. My mom always taught me that, to open doors for men, too, so they also feel special. LOL. It’s just hard for me, sometimes, to feel vulnerable around a man.

And yes, it is dismaying to see manners used in transactional ways.
