I am reading about this, as well - currently, I'm reading Riane Eisler's books and she is careful not to use the word "matriarchy" because the assumption is that in cultures described that way, the women had dominance over the men, when in fact, matrilineal cultures were largely egalitarian societies. Interestingly, I want to point out here that spellcheck does not recognize the word "matrilineal."
