I am struck by accountability in gun violence more than ever after the events in GA, watching law enforcement take SUCH CARE to construct a harmless narrative about white male shooter. I'm dumbfounded by it all. Though not surprised.
I will never forgot coming to work the day of Sandy Hook. (I was a teacher, remember.) One of the most terrifying days of my life.
I used to get into arguments about guns with my gun-loving ex. He told me there was no such thing as irresponsible owners - that there was no danger of death or injury because all gun owners took their responsibilities very seriously.
His cousin was a cop who had worked with firearms for almost 20 years. One day, the cousin, while cleaning his gun, accidentally fired it. The bullet passed through his left hand, went through the floor, and embedded itself into the wall just above the couch where his little girl sat every morning and night to watch TV. She could've been killed. He ended up in the ER to have surgery on his hand.
My partner said it was just a fluke.
