I wholeheartedly agree. I have tried to make this same argument about shaving. Here's the thing: If the cultural norm was to NOT shave, to NOT wear makeup, very few women would do either.

The reason we CHOOSE it, the reason we feel better shaving or wearing makeup, is because we were taught to believe this is beautiful. That is deeply engrained in us.

That said, I totally agree that it is everyone's choice and I fully support that, as well.
