Just Because It Involves Women Doesn’t Make It Feminist
Don’t tell us Blue Origin’s NS-31 spaceflight was a feminist triumph while the founder of the company supports a president who is scrubbing women from NASA
The backlash started before Blue Origin’s NS-31 all-female spaceflight mission launched. Six women, three of them well-known celebrities, were heading to space on what was marketed as a glass-ceiling shattering triumph of feminism.
And Americans were not having it. A quick scroll through social media a week ago would have revealed all the eye-rolling this spaceflight was inspiring, not to mention the downright anger and frustration. Other female celebrities even took to the airwaves to voice their dissent. Olivia Wilde criticized the opulence of the spaceflight on social media, while another Olivia (Munn) called it “gluttonous” on Today with Jenna & Friends. “…[T]here are so many other things that are so important in the world right now,” she said.
Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski had an even more scathing opinion. “Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space…for what? I’m disgusted. Literally, I’m disgusted.”
