My dad cared about women’s rights but consent really wasn’t a thing when I was a young lady — and my dad bought into the cultural narrative that men couldn’t control themselves and so it was a woman’s responsibility to do so. Everything else echoed his belief. At my Christian high school, they measured the length of our skirts when we arrived because we had to make sure we weren’t distracting the boys with immoral thoughts by dressing provocatively. That message was EVERYWHERE.
