One of the most powerful statements here is simply the fact that there is a direct link between McConnell's (and many other white people) position today and his family's history of slave ownership. I mean, it's true that ALL white Americans have benefitted from living in a country that was built on the philosophy of white supremacy, whether their family owned slaves or not, whether they lived here for generations or not. It is an overwhelming thought - terrifying to realize how powerful white supremacy is, and how far back (and forward and left and right) its influence spans.
