Rest assured, I will never get on board with this fatphobic nonsense, nor would I ever take the typical stance on childhood obesity because I have VERY different thoughts about it. For instance, I feel the APA ought to have used their determination to tackle this issue by pressuring the Dept. of Education to stop contracting with companies that provide shitty, processed foods for school meals or to stop allocating dollars according to instructional time (which causes schools to cut recess time) even when studies overwhelmingly prove that kids learn best when they have frequent breaks and lots of opportunity for physical activity in the outdoors. I’m a former teacher. I’ve seen all the data and watched our schools ignore it for years.

If there are weight problems, it’s because of SYSTEMIC issues supported by our institutions. (And based on what I’ve read about who is funding the medical studies around obesity and that most of it is correlative data, which isn’t the same as cause, I’m not convinced that we have a serious problem.) And I’m absolutely SICK of people blaming parents, and particularly mothers for this. OMG.

That’s not even all I have to say about it. LOL. I could go on. But I’ll spare you. I hope you write about it, too! This approach feels very wrong to me — pills and surgeries for kids? Fuck no. (Also…interesting to note that these “solutions” are very profitable for certain people/institutions. Hmm…)
