That’s what bothers me so much about it — how close I feel I got to it. If you look at the type of people I’m attracted to, this type isn’t anywhere near my list. So how did it happen?

As bad as he sounded in an essay in which I named all his worst flaw and almost none of the good ones, he was actually extremely caring, good to his family, loyal to his friends, protective, generous…I could go on. But all that other stuff was underneath that. And a lot of it didn’t come out until we’d been together for years.

However…I’m learning that, as you said, there’s sometimes a hidden agenda and you can just feel it. I think I have felt this in the past, but I wasn’t taught to trust myself and so I didn’t listen. This past year, I’ve been in contact with a lot of men with a lot of hidden agendas and it’s been a wonderful crash course in discerning legit folks from potential danger. I’m finally starting to listen to those feelings.
