"Those who cannot address their privilege are unqualified to ask men to handle theirs." This is so powerful.
I still see this denial of privilege everywhere and it is so discouraging. During our local elections, a city council candidate said that systemic racism does not exist in our small town. I was floored. How can anyone say that? How can anyone acknowledge that it exists in America, "but not in our town?" Do they really think the micro doesn't reflect the macro? So out of touch. (He didn't win, thank god.)
I think a lot of white people think they can be removed from the system - exist outside it or above it. But we cannot. The system literally lives within us, and we can never remove ourselves from it. There's no easy escape by saying, "Oh, I'm not part of that."
Excellent, as always.
