What Jared Leto and the Southern Baptist Church Appear to Have in Common
(And they’re not the only ones…)
Impropriety. Misconduct. Inappropriate relationships. Flirting with teenagers.
These are all descriptions used by news outlets to describe recent allegations against Jared Leto by nine women.
Most of the words the accusers used were notably different. Their statements included terms like assault, trauma, abuse, and predatory.
While it’s true that some of the victims’ statements contain a little of both, I can’t help but notice that none of the headlines reflected the more incendiary terms, which is quite remarkable considering how hard media outlets have to work in an industry so hugely over-saturated with content that inflammatory headlines are basically a requirement if clicks are the goal.
But naturally, this is one of few instances in which the media plays it down. Because in a patriarchal culture wherein male dominance is largely maintained through systemic violence against women, speaking plainly of this is just too much a threat to the system.
And frankly, I’m over it.
