You nailed this. I am uncomfortable with the term "ally," as well, up to and including in feminist circles. I want individual relationships - friendships - not allies. I want those friends to be compassionate, responsible people who care about cleaning up the messes in this world.

I don't see much value in the term "ally" - and your breakdown of it really helped me understand what my fundamental issues are with the term.
